Big thanks to Kate Mag for the Private Only plugin, which allows you to password protect a whole site (like this).
If you use a live development server during your WordPress development, you should check out this plugin. It’s a few steps better than just unchecking the setting that says allows search engines to find this site.
I put that Private Only and the plugin that goes with it on a new site with theme 2015, no changes and only a couple posts. I was locked out. Finally found that if I tried to log in (admin) and was rejected, if I clicked the ‘Back to …’ link below on the login form, and THEN tried again , it showed me the start page, with an ‘edit’ link at the top. Taking that got me to the dashboard. I took them off immediately.
