The Correct Size for a WordPress Theme Screenshot is 1200×900 Pixels

This is something I regularly have to look up and it has changed over time to a much larger resolution. I believe this was to accommodate updates in the WordPress.org theme library.

As of Summer 2017, the screenshot.png file that goes along with your theme should be 1200 x 900 pixels. However, “The screenshot will only be shown as 387×290, but the over-sized image allows for high-resolution viewing on HiDPI displays.” (WP Codex)

  1. The Codex states:

“The recommended image size is 880×660. The screenshot will only be shown as 387×290, but the over double-sized image allows for high-resolution viewing on HiDPI displays.”

  2. Hey Zac,

My name’s Kenso and I’m actually one of your students on Treehouse – I got here by Googling, ‘how large should screenshot.png be.’

My question is: should the screenshot.png file still be 600 x 450 px?

    Thanks,

    Kenso

  3. Hi Zac,

I remember you mentioning that size in a previous tutorial I went through on Team Treehouse. However, the more recent one I’m currently going through (also by you) uses a screenshot.png that is 880 x 660 pixels. Is this now the correct size, or is 600 x 450 px still considered correct as well?
